Three of a Kind

Three of a kind is a poker hand with three cards of the same rank, such as three 8s or three queens.

Three of a kind is a poker hand with three cards of the same rank. In video poker, it is usually a paying hand. In poker and carnival games, it can be a made hand, part of a bonus payout, or the start of a bigger hand such as a full house or four of a kind.

Plain Talk

Three of a kind means three matching ranks.

Three 7s, three kings, or three 2s all qualify. The suits do not matter. In video poker, three of a kind is often a bread-and-butter payout: not rare enough to be a jackpot, but important enough to affect return.

This glossary page defines the term. For the full game context, read Video Poker, Carnival Games, and the Glossary.

Where You See It

You see three of a kind on video poker paytables, poker hand-ranking charts, Pair Plus-style bonus tables, Ultimate Texas Hold’em-style comparisons, and casino training material for poker-based games.

Why It Matters

Three of a kind matters because it sits at the line between ordinary recovery and meaningful payout.

In many video poker games, one pair or two pair may pay little or nothing compared with the stake. Three of a kind gives the player a stronger return and can also be a stepping stone to a full house or four of a kind on the draw.

Example

You are playing Jacks or Better and are dealt 9-9-9-K-2.

You already have three of a kind. In ordinary video poker strategy, you usually hold the three 9s and discard the unrelated cards. The draw may improve to a full house or four of a kind, but the hand already has a paying base.

From the Casino Side:

From the casino side, three of a kind is part of the payout ladder. It appears often enough that its payout affects the long-run return of the game.

A game designer can make the paytable feel generous by showing familiar winning hands, while still keeping the total return below 100%. The hand name does not tell the full value. The posted payout does.

Common Misunderstanding

The common mistake is treating all trips as equally important across games.

Three of a kind in a standard poker showdown, a video poker machine, and a carnival side bet can mean different things financially. The rank name is shared. The payout rules are not.

Hard Truth

Three matching cards can look like a strong win, but in casino math the question is always: strong compared with what payout?

Deeper Insight

Three of a kind is common enough to teach an important casino lesson: frequency and value are different.

A hand can happen more often and pay less, or happen rarely and pay much more. The total return comes from both pieces. This is why Hit Frequency and Payout Percentage should be read together.

Formula / Calculation

Hand Contribution = Probability of Hand × Payout for That Hand

Payout Percentage = Total Returned to Players / Total Wagered

Formula Explanation in Plain English

A hand’s importance is not only its rank. It is how often it occurs multiplied by how much it pays.

Three of a kind may not be glamorous, but it can carry meaningful weight in a paytable because it occurs far more often than rare hands. For deeper context, read Expected Value, Video Poker, and Ask a Veteran.
