Plain-English Explanation
Bet Comparison Table
This table uses the currently selected wheel type. The highlighted row is your selected bet.
| Bet Type | Numbers Covered | Win Chance | Payout | House Edge | Expected Loss on $10 |
|---|
Math Behind This
Win probability = numbers covered / total wheel pockets This shows how often the selected bet should win over a very large number of spins. Expected value = (win chance × net win) - (loss chance × bet amount) This shows the average result of one spin before short-term luck gets involved. House edge = expected loss / bet amount This converts the casino advantage into a percentage of each unit wagered. Expected loss over time = bet amount × house edge × number of spins This estimates the long-run cost of repeating the same bet size. What This Calculator Shows
This tool calculates the real probability, payout, house edge, and expected loss of common roulette bets. It does not sell betting-system promises. It shows the math behind the game before money is placed on the layout.
Why Roulette Has a House Edge
Roulette payouts are close to fair, but not quite fair. A straight-up bet pays 35:1, but on European roulette there are 37 pockets. The true odds are 36 to 1 against, not 35 to 1. That missing unit is the house edge.
European vs American Roulette
European roulette has one zero and a 2.70% house edge on standard bets. American roulette has 0 and 00, which raises the house edge to 5.26%. Triple-zero roulette adds another losing zero pocket and pushes the standard house edge to about 7.69%.
Best Roulette Bet
No standard roulette bet has a positive expectation. The best common option is French roulette on even-money bets with La Partage or En Prison, where the house edge drops to about 1.35% because the zero costs only half as much.
Betting Systems Warning
Martingale, Fibonacci, Labouchere, D’Alembert, and similar systems do not change roulette odds. They only change bet size and risk pattern. The zero pockets and payout gap still remain.
Why More Zeros Are Worse
Extra zero pockets create more ways for the casino to win without improving the player payout. That is why American roulette is worse than European roulette, and triple-zero roulette is worse again.
Responsible Gambling Note
This calculator is for education only. Roulette is gambling, not income. Do not gamble with money you cannot afford to lose.
