The 1-3-2-6 baccarat system is a positive progression: the player increases the wager after wins according to a four-step sequence of 1 unit, 3 units, 2 units, then 6 units. A loss normally ends the sequence and sends the next bet back to 1 unit.
That structure makes 1-3-2-6 less aggressive than loss-chasing progressions such as Martingale. It does not make it a winning baccarat strategy. The progression changes how much is exposed after particular results; it does not change the probability of the next hand.
The sequence is designed to press a short winning run
Using a clean even-money example, the progression is:
1 → 3 → 2 → 6 units
A player advances one step after each win. After completing the fourth win, the sequence is finished and usually restarts at 1 unit. After a loss, most versions reset immediately.
With a $10 base unit on an even-money wager:

The attraction is obvious. Four wins turn a $10 base unit into a $120 sequence profit without ever risking an infinite doubling chain.
The weakness is equally important: the order of stake sizes does not tell baccarat when a win is more likely.
Breaking at each step produces very different feelings
For a clean even-money model, the sequence outcomes are:

This is why the system can feel clever. Once the first two wins are secured, a loss at step 3 can still leave a small profit. After three wins, losing the 6-unit step can return the sequence roughly to even in an even-money model.
But the table is not granting a free roll. Earlier wins are being re-exposed. The fourth bet is six times the base unit because the system has deliberately concentrated more action at the end of a winning cluster.
Standard Banker commission makes the unit arithmetic less neat
Baccarat players often prefer Banker because the standard Banker wager has a slightly lower house edge than Player under common rules. On a traditional 5% commission table, however, a winning Banker bet typically pays 0.95 units of profit for each unit wagered rather than a full 1.00 unit.
That changes the sequence arithmetic.
If a $10 Banker unit pays 95% profit on wins, four winning steps produce:
0.95 × (1 + 3 + 2 + 6) = 11.4 units of profit
At a $10 base unit, that is $114 rather than the $120 clean even-money illustration.
The break points also shift slightly. After three Banker wins, the accumulated profit is 5.7 units; losing the 6-unit fourth step leaves about -0.3 units rather than exactly zero.
This does not make Banker worse than Player overall. It simply shows why progression charts built with pure even-money payouts should not be copied blindly onto commission baccarat.

A Tie usually pauses the main-bet sequence rather than proving anything
On standard baccarat main bets, a Tie normally pushes Player and Banker wagers. If the 1-3-2-6 system is being applied to Player or Banker, a Tie therefore usually leaves that step unresolved: the same sequence stake can be repeated on the next decision.
Some players invent their own rule—count the Tie as a loss, count it as a win, restart, or switch sides. Those are system variations, not properties of baccarat.
The important discipline is to write the sequence rule before play. Changing it after a Tie, streak, or frustrating result makes the system impossible to evaluate because the player is no longer following one defined method.
The progression does not create information about the next hand
The strongest myth around 1-3-2-6 is not that it can never produce a profit. It obviously can. A completed sequence produces a satisfying short-run result.
The myth is that winning the first three steps somehow improves the fourth wager.
It does not. The baccarat drawing rules do not know the player is on step four. The cards do not reward a well-organized staking plan. The 6-unit wager is larger because the player chose to make it larger, not because the casino has offered better odds.

Expected loss follows total action, not the elegance of the sequence
A full 1-3-2-6 progression places:
1 + 3 + 2 + 6 = 12 units of total action
With a $25 base unit, a fully completed four-step sequence therefore creates:
12 × $25 = $300 total amount wagered
If the sequence is placed on Player and the house edge is approximately 1.24%, a simple expected-loss estimate for that $300 of completed action is:
$300 × 0.0124 = $3.72 expected loss
That $3.72 is not what the player will lose in the four hands. The actual sequence will finish at one of a small number of much larger positive or negative results. The figure is the long-run average cost attached to the action if the same type of exposure is repeated many times.
If a sequence stops early after a loss, less than 12 units were wagered, so the expected cost of that particular sequence is based on the action actually placed. The broader point remains: organization does not exempt any wager from its underlying edge.
The table procedure itself is fixed by the game rules. The Massachusetts baccarat rules are one regulatory example of baccarat drawing and settlement procedure; a staking pattern has no mechanism to alter those procedures.
The system changes volatility and cash-flow shape
A staking progression can matter to the shape of a session even when it cannot change expectation.
Flat betting keeps every main wager at the same nominal size. The 1-3-2-6 system deliberately creates larger exposure after wins. That tends to produce many small resets, some modest sequence profits, and occasional large completed sequences.
This can feel psychologically easier than a negative progression because the largest bets follow success rather than failure. The player is not doubling into a losing run.
That is a genuine risk-management distinction. It is not a mathematical advantage over the casino.

Raising the base unit after a completed sequence changes the system again
A common real-world behavior is to complete 1-3-2-6, feel that the system is “working,” and then increase the base unit from $10 to $20 or $25.
That creates a second progression layered on top of the first. The original sequence may have been bounded, but the player has converted success into a permanently larger starting stake.
The same happens when a player refuses to reset after a loss, adds side bets during the sequence, or decides the fourth step is “too important” to leave at the planned amount.
The practical protection is to define:
- the base unit;
- the four progression stakes;
- what a Tie does;
- what a loss does;
- what happens after completion;
- the maximum number of sequences;
- the session stop point.
Without those rules, “1-3-2-6” becomes only a label for improvising stake sizes.
Side bets make the progression more expensive, not more powerful
Applying 1-3-2-6 to a high-edge baccarat side bet is especially misleading. The sequence cannot reduce the side bet’s house edge, and the larger later steps concentrate more money into an already expensive wager.
The system should therefore never be evaluated by asking only, “Can this payout complete the sequence?” The relevant question is, “What is the expected cost of all the action I am creating?”
A high payout does not imply a high return. It usually reflects a lower probability of winning the wager.
Why completed sequences are so persuasive
The 1-3-2-6 system is psychologically attractive because it produces a memorable event: four connected wins and a large final result. Completed sequences are easy to remember and discuss.
The failed sequences are less dramatic. A step-one loss is just another reset. A step-two loss is annoying but forgettable. Over time, memory can over-weight the clean 12-unit completion and under-weight the repeated small failures that funded the opportunity to see it.
That is one reason a written ledger is more useful than a collection of stories. Record every sequence, total action, commissions, session result, and any rule changes. The record does not turn the system profitable, but it prevents one spectacular completion from becoming the entire evidence base.
A controlled progression is still a negative-expectation progression
The fairest description of 1-3-2-6 is that it is a bounded way to press wins. Compared with Martingale, it avoids the dangerous logic of increasing stakes to recover losses. Compared with flat betting, it produces more variable stake exposure and gives winning clusters more impact on the session.
Those differences are real.
What it cannot do is identify the next winning baccarat hand. The system determines when the player risks more, not when the casino offers better odds.
If someone uses the sequence as entertainment structure, the base unit should be small enough that a 6-unit step is routine rather than emotionally exceptional, and the session should still have independent money and time boundaries.
