Definition
Ticket In, Ticket Out (TITO) is a technology used in slot machines and electronic games that allows players to deposit and withdraw credits using paper tickets with barcodes, rather than physical coins or tokens.
In context
When a player finishes playing a slot machine, they press the “Cash Out” button. Instead of hearing the “clink-clink” of coins falling into a tray, the machine prints a TITO slip. The player can then slide that ticket into a different machine to continue playing or take it to a “Redemption Kiosk” to receive cash.
Why it matters
TITO revolutionized the casino floor by eliminating the need for “coin teams,” reducing machine maintenance (coin jams), and allowing players to move between games much faster. It also provides casinos with better data on player movement.

In detail
Before the early 2000s, the casino floor was a noisy, dirty, and labor-intensive environment. Players carried heavy plastic buckets filled with dirty coins, and machines frequently broke down because of “coin jams.” The introduction of Ticket In, Ticket Out (TITO) changed everything.
How TITO Works
When you insert a ticket into a slot machine, the machine’s barcode scanner reads the unique ID on the slip. It then communicates with a central “Validation Server” to confirm that the ticket is genuine and hasn’t already been cashed. Once verified, the credits are instantly added to the machine.
When you cash out, the process is reversed. The machine generates a new unique barcode, tells the server “I am issuing a ticket for $X.XX,” and then prints the slip. This ticket is essentially “money” within the casino’s ecosystem, but it is worthless once it expires (usually after 30 to 90 days) or if it has already been scanned.
The Benefits for the Casino
- Labor Savings: In the “coin era,” casinos had to employ “hard count” teams to physically empty machines of heavy buckets of coins. With TITO, there are no coins to move. This saved millions in labor and physical security costs.
- Speed: Machines can be emptied and refilled much faster. Additionally, players don’t have to wait for a “hand pay” for every small win; the ticket prints instantly.
- Hygiene: Coins are famously dirty. TITO made the gambling experience “cleaner” for both the staff and the players.
The Psychology of TITO
From a psychological perspective, TITO is a massive win for the house. It “disassociates” the player from the value of their money. It is much easier to slide a piece of paper back into a machine than it is to reach into a bucket and physically count out $20 worth of quarters.
Furthermore, TITO solves the problem of “abandoned change.” Players often have tickets worth small amounts, like $0.12 or $0.45. Rather than walking all the way to a kiosk to cash out twelve cents, many players will simply “bet the change” on a final spin or leave the ticket behind. These small amounts, multiplied by thousands of players, add up to a significant “found profit” for the casino.
Security Features
TITO tickets are highly secure. They include the casino name, the machine number that issued it, the date, the time, and a unique 18-digit validation number. If you lose a TITO ticket, it is very difficult to recover the money unless you have a player’s card and can prove the machine you were playing at the exact time of the cash-out. Because the system is server-based, if a ticket is reported stolen, the casino can “void” that barcode in the system immediately.
Summary
TITO is the bridge between the old world of physical currency and the new world of digital gambling. It made the casino more efficient, more profitable, and much more convenient for the player, even if it cost us the nostalgic sound of coins hitting the metal tray.
